MADISON, Wis. (AP) — The Great Lakes’ frigid fresh water used to keep shipwrecks so well preserved that divers could see dishes in the cupboards. Downed planes that spent decades underwater were left so pristine they could practically fly again when archaeologists finally discovered them. Now, an invasive mussel is destroying shipwrecks deep in the depths of the lakes, forcing archeologists and amateur historians into a race against time to find as many sites as they can before the region touching eight U.S. states and the Canadian province of Ontario loses any physical trace of its centuries-long maritime history. “What you need to understand is every shipwreck is covered with quagga mussels in the lower Great Lakes,” Wisconsin state maritime archaeologist Tamara Thomsen said. “Everything. If you drain the lakes, you’ll get a bowl of quagga mussels.”Quagga mussels, finger-sized mollusks with voracious appetites, have become the dominant invasive species in the lower Great Lakes over...Texas high school football scores for Friday, Sept. 22

Playing a team with a prolific passer, the best defense can very well be a minute-munching offense.Cue Isaiah Tisdle. The senior back accounted for 219 of Woodbury’s 313 rushing yards, and he scored a career-high four times as the Royals ruined the East Ridge homecoming with a 27-18 win at the sold-out Raptor’s Nest.It is Woodbury’s first win over its crosstown rival in four years.“This is our city now,” Tisdle said. “We got the work done, got the job done, and now we’re celebrating with our guys.”Three of the four Woodbury (3-1) scoring drives were at least a dozen plays.“Our keys this week were emotional control, sustained drives that end with points, and protect the football. We did all three,” said coach Andy Hill.Woodbury had the ball for more than 33 of the game’s 48 minutes.Up 14-12 at the break, Woodbury got the ball to start the second half. And they kept it. LOS ANGELES — A night after Mike Yastrzemski called on his teammates to “play with a little more edge,” “take a little more pride” and “hold each other to a higher standard,” he atoned for his own mental mistake in Thursday night’s series-opening loss with a big homer to lead the way in a 5-1 win Friday. With two outs in the fourth inning, Yastrzemski hooked a two-run homer around the right-field foul pole that broke a scoreless tie and powered the Giants’ win over the Dodgers (94-59), only their second in eight games on this final road trip of the season, pulling them back even in the win-loss column.Yastrzemski’s homer, his 15th of the season, followed a pinch-hit double by Joc Pederson, and was padded by two more long balls, a solo shot from Thairo Estrada in the sixth and two-run number from rookie Tyler Fitzgerald in the ninth, the first of his career. That was all the offense needed behind Sean Manaea’s most impressive ...AL Central Division Champions

His second try was true. The drive was necessary after freshman Anthony Colandrea led Virginia on an 11-play, 66-yard drive and hit Malik Washington from 3 yards out to make it 21-19. The Cavaliers, however, were called for unsportsmanlike conduct after the play, and on their 2-point attempt from the 18, Colandrea hit Malachi Fields to tie it up.Another 15-yard unsportsmanlike call — this one on the freshman quarterback — forced Virginia to back up 15 yards on the kickoff, and a nice return set the Wolfpack up at the Virginia 48.
