Butler, Heat start 2nd round with 108-101 win over Knicks

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 21:25:14 GMT

NEW YORK (AP) — Jimmy Butler had 25 points and 11 rebounds, and the No. 8-seeded Miami Heat kept rolling after barely reaching the postseason, beating the New York Knicks 108-101 on Sunday in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference semifinals.Gabe Vincent scored 20 points for the Heat, who became the sixth No. 8 seed to beat a No. 1 when they toppled Milwaukee in the first round and continue to look nothing like a team that needed to win a play-in game just to get the final postseason berth in the East. They averaged 124 points in that series behind Butler’s 37.6 per game, but they pulled this one out with old-fashioned defense and rebounding that has always worked so well before for them at this time of year.RJ Barrett scored 26 points and Jalen Brunson had 25 for the fifth-seeded Knicks, who are in the second round of the playoffs for the first time since 2013. They started strong and led most of the first half, but the Heat eventually got the Madison Square Garden crowd quieter and...

Knicks collapse in second half, drop Game 1 to Heat 108-101

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 21:25:14 GMT

Jimmy Butler was on the court, writing in pain. There was about five minutes remaining in Sunday’s Game 1, and it felt, during that brief moment, that Butler’s badly twisted ankle shifted the game, perhaps the series, to the Knicks.Except it didn’t work out like that. At least not in Game 1. Butler never subbed out. He emerged out of the timeout to bury two free throws. He was clearly under physical distress, limping around the court down the stretch. But it was the Knicks who were shellshocked at MSG, not the Heat.In the two minutes following Butler’s injury, the Knicks were outscored, 9-2, and that stretch became the story of Miami’s 108-101 victory Sunday at MSG. Butler was nothing more than a decoy in the final minutes, standing around the perimeter while watching teammates Kyle Lowry, Gabe Vincent and Bam Adebayo bury the home team.Butler still finished with 25 points and 11 boards. The Knicks, playing without Julius Randle, had no rebuttal. They sho...

Beyonce petitions IRS to contest $2.7M back tax bill

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 21:25:14 GMT

After the Internal Revenue Service claimed Beyoncé owed nearly $2.7 million in back taxes from 2018 and 2019, she has now decided to file a petition disputing the claim. The 41-year-old music and fashion icon filed the petition in April, and has also requested a trial over the matter in Los Angeles, reports People. A potential date for the trial is unknown. The IRS originally dealt Beyoncé a Notice of Deficiency, which claimed she owed a total of $805,850 from 2018 and $1,442,747 from 2019, in addition to $449,719.40 in combined penalties from the two-year period.Beyoncé’s legal team is disputing at least $868,766 of that total, arguing that Bey had donated that amount to charity in 2018, and therefore it should have been counted as a deduction. The petition also agues that if there’s a deficiency in her payments, she “has acted reasonably and in good faith,” and should not be required to pay it.The Grammy winner has supported multiple charities over the course of her career, an...

Heat, Butler make another playoff statement, pushing past Knicks 108-101 in series opener

The opponent changed, the magic continues. The team that required two chances just to survive the play-in round, entering the NBA playoffs as the No. 8 seed at the bottom of the Eastern Conference bracket, is now three victories from consecutive appearances in the conference finals. No, nothing as dramatic as pushing past the No. 1-seeded Milwaukee Bucks, as they did in five games in the first round, but the Miami Heat made another statement Sunday. This time it was overcoming a 12-point deficit to take a 1-0 lead over the New York Knicks in the best-of-seven Eastern Conference semifinals with a 108-101 victory at Madison Square Garden. With Jimmy Butler again in playoff mode, the Heat made it a second consecutive series of stealing homecourt advantage, having done it two weeks earlier at Milwaukee’s Fiserv Forum.Butler led the Heat with 25 points and 11 rebounds, supported by 20 points from Gabe Vincent, 18 from Kyle Lowry and 16 from Bam Adebayo. The Knicks, playing in the injury...

Sudan’s army and rival extend truce, despite ongoing clashes

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 21:25:14 GMT

CAIRO (AP) — Sudan’s army and its rival paramilitary said Sunday they will extend a humanitarian cease-fire a further 72 hours. The decision follows international pressure to allow the safe passage of civilians and aid but the shaky truce has not so far stopped the clashes. In statements, both sides accused the other of violations. The agreement has deescalated the fighting in some areas but violence continues to push civilians to flee. Aid groups have also struggled to get badly needed supplies into the country. The conflict erupted on April 15 between the nation’s army and its paramilitary force, and threatens to thrust Sudan into a raging civil war.Earlier Sunday, an aircraft carrying eight tons of emergency medical aid landed in Sudan to resupply hospitals devastated by the fighting, according to the International Committee of the Red Cross, which organized the shipment. It arrived as the civilian death toll from the countrywide violence topped 400. More than two-thirds of ...

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Masked gunmen fired without warning into a crowd at a late night teen party at a South Carolina park over the weekend, wounding nine people, a sheriff said. All nine hit by gunfire are expected to live, as well as a woman who was injured when she was run over by a fleeing car and another person who was cut on the hand, Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott said in a Sunday update on the Saturday shooting.“So fortunate and so glad and so thankful that right now we believe that everybody is going to survive,” Lott said. “It’s not because those who were doing the shooting didn’t try.”Deputies were called to Meadowlake Park near Columbia around 1:20 a.m. Saturday and found only a few people at the scene. Not long after, hospitals started reporting several gunshot victims arriving in emergency rooms, deputies said.Teenagers from several high schools had gathered at the park for the afterhours “flash party” that was announced on social media and not sponsored by the local...
