Exxon Mobil more than doubled its profit during the first quarter, producing more oil to overcome energy prices that have declined during a period of economic unease. Net oil and gas net production jumped by nearly 300,000 oil-equivalent barrels per day compared with the same period last year, which was marked by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and soaring energy prices. Exxon earned $11.43 billion, or $2.79 per share, for the three months ended March 31. Per-share adjusted earning were $2.83, topping Wall Street projections of $2.65, and it more than twice the $5.48 billion, or $1.28 per share, it earned during the first quarter last year. Exxon does not adjust its reported results based on one-time events such as asset sales. Revenue for the Irving, Texas-based company was $86.56 billion, down from $90.5 billion a year earlier, and just shy of analyst expectations. Net production was 3.8 million oil-equivalent barrels per day, up nearly 160,000 oil-equivalent barrels per day co...

‘Peter Pan & Wendy’ lacks enough magic to truly take flight

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 07:55:00 GMT

(CNN) — “Peter Pan & Wendy” wants to conjure magic but turns out to be low on fairy dust, yielding a dreary live-action adaptation of the 1953 movie that transforms Neverland into what vaguely feels like a discount version of Pandora. Modest narrative upgrades help lift the Disney+ film above the service’s recent “Pinocchio,” but clearing that very low bar amounts to damnation with faint praise. There have been numerous live-action renderings of J.M. Barrie’s classic, from “Hook” to “Peter Pan” to simply “Pan” — plus “Finding Neverland,” which cast Johnny Depp as Barrie in a touching look at the play’s origins.Other than a few welcome and necessary changes to rid the Disney animated film of more problematic elements, and a bit more backstory explaining this Captain Hook (Jude Law) and his semi-depressed demeanor, this version pretty closely adheres to the basic blueprint, ponderi...

ASK IRA: Did Bam Adebayo provide needed answers with his triple-double?

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 07:55:00 GMT

Q: Bam Adebayo had a triple-double in the most important game of the season. I think that means he showed up. – Ryan.A: And it was more about the timing than the numbers. It was about stepping up at the moments of truth. Bam Adebayo’s versatility in the end mitigated the Bucks’ size advantage that had been the story of the series. At times Wednesday, it was apparent that Bam Adebayo’s hamstring was not right. And the foul trouble did not help, either. But when Jimmy Butler needed a friend, Bam was there. And for all the social-media blabber about Jimmy’s supposed reluctance to pass to Jimmy, Bam’s dimes down the stretch allowed Jimmy and the Heat to cash in. So now Bam gets to rest his hamstring before the comparisons begin to Mitchell Robinson. Bottom line is Bam got past Nikola Vucevic in the play-in, past Brook Lopez in five games, and now he lives to be versatile another day (or week, or longer).Q: We all thought the Bucks would take the serie...
