Runners ready for 20th annual Zilker Relays

AUSTIN (KXAN) — The Austin running community is abuzz for the unofficial kickoff of racing season with the Zilker Relays taking place on Friday night.The 20th annual event includes a 10-mile race, with teams comprised of four runners. Each participant runs a 2.5-mile loop within Zilker Park, to claim bragging rights as the fastest team in town.Before the relay race, a kid’s dash will take place. This includes a 400-yard dash (recommended for children in grades 1st-5th) and a 200-yard dash (recommended for kids in Pre-K and kindergarten).Each kid participating will receive a Zilker Relays kids cape. California Gov. Gavin Newsom will have the chance to approve an excise tax on firearms and ammunition after Assembly Bill 28 was passed by Democrats Thursday. If signed, an 11% tax from the sales of firearms, firearm precursor parts and ammunition would be imposed on dealers and manufacturers beginning July 1, 2024. Money received by the measure would be used to fund various gun violence prevention, education, research and investigation programs, AB-28 states.The bill was introduced by Democrat Assemblymember Jesse Gabriel of District 46. The district represents parts of Los Angeles and Ventura counties.“We’ve passed a lot of good gun safety laws. A security guard was attacked and suffered a head injury when multiple armed bandits attempted to rob a Chatsworth business early Friday morning.The attack in the 21700 block of Lassen Street was reported at around 3:45 a.m., according to the Los Angeles Police Department.Police said five armed men assaulted a security guard with an unknown object, then fled the scene. It's unclear if the attackers actually broke into the business.Footage from the scene shows the guard holding an ice pack to his head, which had a visible wound on its back side.Police could be seen at the business investigating the attack. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina and former GOP Sens. OAKLAND — A 31-year-old woman was fatally shot in East Oakland Thursday night, authorities said.Her name has not yet been released.
